Fondant Sesame St Faces??

I am going to attempt to make my sons first birthday cake, which is themed Sesame St. I have some questions though, how do I make a two tiered cake? How do I make the fondant faces? Templates? By hand? Can I just frost the cake then stick the fondant faces on the sides? Is it better to use gumpaste? I am a newbie and any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!
You cold definitely print out copies of the faces and cut in pieces and then cut fondant with an exacto knife then reconstruct....That's what I do when I want to do a logo in fondant....you can look up cake stacking on internet for tutorial, it's relatively common... Good luck
