What kind of icing covering are you using? Fondant? Buttercream?

With buttercream, either put on a double layer - as the first one will become blotchy as it absorbs grease from the icing. With fondant, moisten the ribbon then wipe off most of the moisture then apply - whatever small amount of moisture still on the ribbon will adhere it to the fondant. All ribbon has a natural curl to it - use this curl to conform to the shape of the cake.

DO NOT use wired ribbon. It is impossible to unkink!

I've heard also you can put regular tape/packing tape on the back of the ribbon so the color won't bleed thru onto the frosting.

You can also go ahead and cover the ribbon with cooking spray or butter to make the wet spots all uniform on the buttercream icing. It will change the color of the ribbon a bit, but it is better than random dark spots. I usually try to talk people into a fondant ribbon because it is just easier!
