I have made some fondant buttons to put on a baby shower cake. Now that they have dried they are "dull". What can I do to make them "shine" at this point? I have always been told that to put water on fondant after it hardens will turn it to mush. Thanks[/i]
Brush on a light coating of vegetable oil.
Is everyone in agreement that this is how you would do it?
I use crisco if the fondant has tiny fractures. But if it looks good and you just want shine you have a few options. For dark colors all you have to do is take a paintbrush with a drop of water and paint the fondant with the damp brush. The dark colors get shiney.
For light colors you can try the same, but they won't glisten as well. Depends on the type of shine you want. Pearl or luster dust gives a great shine, but it's a different type of shine.
Steaming does the same thing, but the shine doesn't last as long.
Could you use some pearl dust? You would need to do this before they are applied to the cake.
Pearl dust won't make buttons shiny. It will make them pearlescent.
Confectioner's glaze will also make the buttons shiny, but it's not readily available and is a bigger pain in the patoot than just a drop of veg oil.
