This may be a dumb question.....I am new to the world of edible images. Is the frosting supposed to "melt" into the buttercream or stay as a firm sheet on top of the cake? Thanks.

Depends on how wet your icing is and if you store your cake covered or not. Tasted better when melts In a little, sometimes colors can bleed
