I've always used a drum board that is 4" bigger than my bottom tier But there are times that it just looks too big. Yet it seems that using one that's 2" bigger than the bottom tier it appears too small.

I've got an 8"/10" cake for this weekend and I was going to put it on a 14" board but I'm thinking that it may be too big.

What do you use?

Thanks,

I normally use drums 2" larger than my cake (my cakes are mostly 10" 95% of the time) - simply because I am having a hard time finding cake boxes larger than 12". But ideally I would have liked to go up about an inch, because I sometimes want to decorate more around the base of the cake. Never gone up 4", though.

I like using a 14" under a 10" cake. It depends on whether a message or a large decoration needs to be on the board.

I will usually use a drum 2" larger if it's a small two tier (like a 10 and 6) and one 4" if it's a larger one. It also depends on how much I want to decorate the board.

I understand you should go 2" larger than cake. My issue is when I do a 9X13 you can't find boxes that fit 11X15 boards. I guess you just have to use a larger box than you need. I sure wish Wilton or someone would create a cake box this size. icon_smile.gif

Me too! I usually will use a board that is 4 inches larger than the cake especially if there are figures and lots of flowers.

Wedding cake bases--I use 2 inches bigger.

I go at least 4 inches bigger, cover the board in fondant, and decorate to match the cake

I use 2 inches bigger than the cake but when I run out of them (I bought them in bulk) I will order 4 inch ones bc these do not leave room for any decorating at all and looks a little just if you know what I mean.

Thanks everyone. The reasons about having more space for decorating is why I tend to go with the 4". It just looked kind of big this time. LOL.

I usually go 2" bigger unless I plan on adding a flower spray at the base of the bottom tier.

Do most of you use a 1/2" drum board for your tiered wedding cakes? I need to transport a 4 tiered cake and was just reading posts to see if I could find any suggestions???
