I am making a chess board cake. I have molds coming for the pieces. I'm wondering about the board itself. I see that alot of people use chocolate as well, but my concern is that it would be difficult to cut. Would fondant squares be a better option? Is there anyone who is willing to share their thoughts? Maybe you've done one and would do it differently if you did it again. I'm just confused as how to best approach the board itself. icon_confused.gif

Fondant squares will give it a cleaner look and be alot easier.

Sue, I made a game board cake last week, so have just had some fun with squares!
Cake was a perfect 10 inch square with very sharp edges, which made an excellent base to work on.
I covered the cake with white fondant, then ruled a grid of 8 x 8 1 inch squares, using a black food marker.
This gave room for a board surround or edging.
I painted the squares in the colours I wanted for my game board, using liquid icing colours and a small paint brush.
The black outlines of the squares, created by the food marker, made a good contrast.
The finished board was quite impressive and all were very pleased with it.

Hi Sue,

I used dark and white chocolate fondant mixed with a little CMC to make each square. The cake was a 10 inch square so I made 2 cardboard square cutouts of little over 1 inch to fit the chess board. The cake was covered with fondant with a marble effect. The squares were then assembled on top of this layer. The CMC made sure the squares did not lose shape when picked up to assemble.

Always surprised at the timeliness of some of the CC posts! I am doing a Twilight cake in a couple of weeks and using the chessboard from Breaking Dawn as the top. The birthday girl has requested no fondant so I bought a black sugar sheet and a 2" square punch and am going to give that a shot. Will post pics if it works out!

If you want the "marbleized" look, this is how I did mine:

They are 1" squares. The base was first covered in the white marbleized fondant and then I placed alternating black and white marbleized squares for the chess board.
