I am putting satin ribbon around a cake, criss-crossing, and need to put a sugar diamond that I purchased from GSA at each intersection. What's the best way to attach it? I was thinking royal icing, but since the diamonds are clear, will that look bad?

Maybe piping gel? Or some really strong gum arabic?

Well since the ribbon is satin there should be no worries about it being edible, why not just hot glue it. If you were using fondant ribbon a little alchohol or vanilla would attatch them.
