Can anyone tell me what the stripes are. It looks like ribbon to me.

Yes, they lookl ike ribbon. But you could do it with strips of fondant too. You just have to be careful not to rip them when putting them on.

Those are ribbon.

Yes, you do them with fondant ribbons. I did it with Sugarveil ribbons and it worked very well.

Top photo is definitely ribbon, it's called string ribbon but the one in the photo looks like quarter inch ribbon, string ribbon is half that width.

It looks like there is bulging between the strips so I would imagine they used real ribbon on that cake. That might look nice on a cake that doesn't have any other decoration, but with the fondant zebra it seems rather unbalanced.

I didn't find it difficult. I spread out the Sugarveil on my smooth silicone mat, ran my FMM ribbon cutter thru it, and when it was dry I chose the best one's to use.

I love the idea of Sugarveil. That would make it easier to handle than fondant. I have wanted to give Sugarveil a go for a while now, I guess there is no need to wait any longer!
