I am looking into buying this for cupcake decorating BUT I have read the reviews and it is 50/50 ... those that love it, really love it but those that don't have had nothing but trouble getting clean cuts ... anyone have one? What do you think? What products do you use? Rolled fondant? Store bought sugar sheets? Do you freeze the sheets or fondant before cutting, like some of the reviewers have suggested? Any help would be appreciated!
I have the Cricut cake and love it. I always add gumpaste or Tylose to my homemade MFF. I can tell when I've added enough by putting a piece of doctored fondant in the palm of one hand and then "smearing" it with the fingers on my other hand. If it kind of stretches, it's good to go. If it breaks apart or kind of crumbles, it needs more gumpaste or Tylose worked it. Then I roll a thin sheet, put that on my greased mat and roll it as thin as I can get it... so I can just begin to see the markings on the mat through the fondant. I put the mat/fondant in the freezer for a few minutes and then cut. I usually get 90 to 100% yield on my cuts. If the pieces are delicate, I put back on the freezer for a few minutes to make the pieces easy to remove from the mat (using a painter's palette knife). I transfer the cut pieces to parchment paper to let them set up for a few minutes before applying to the cake. If I want the pieces for standup decorations, I layer them to make them thicker and use more gumpaste or Tylose to make them stiffer/harder. Using this process, I've had very good luck - even with small and/or intricate pieces that probably shouldn't work with fondant. Lots of practice really helps!
Bought it later last year, tried it with different products, fondant, gumpaste, 50/50 both, sheets, you name it... was not happy with results. Only simple cuts were usable, but those intricate designs came out awful. I was lucky to be able to return it for a full refund just a day before offer expired!
I have one and did not like it at first because try as I might I could not get any fondant or gumpaste to work. I finally purchased some Wilton sugar sheets and it worked perfectly. Now I use it all the time. Love it and worth the $50 I paid for it.
