Any idea how the black design on this cake is done? It doesn't look thin enough to be fondant. Thanks!

perhaps it is piped on black royal icing?

Ive done something similar to this in 2 different ways, both involving royal icing.

1. pipe black royal icing with a very fine tip.

2. with a stencil. I got my damask one at home depot for around $7. place the stencil on the cake, and make sure you hold it very still. Ice royal icing over the stencil, and pull away gently.

hope this helped icon_smile.gif

If you have a Cricut you can also cut out the design with the Elegant Cake cartridge. There are also some molds that look similar and than you can pipe on the design.

Krazyaboutcake, I'm not sure I understand what you mean by using a mold and then piping on the design. Can you elaborate? Thanks so much.
