Hi, ive only just started learning to decorate cakes. I started a few weeks ago with cupcakes and sugarpaste (fondant) and after a few unsuccessful attempts, was advised to add gum trag and this worked a treat.

Now I'm about to attempt my first full sized cake and was advised to use Flowerpaste (gum paste?) as it didn't need gum trag and is easier to work with. I bought a range of pre-coloured pastes this week and have spent the morning trying to make some flowers. Disaster. It was like working with pre chewed chewing gum! Very sticky and stretchy and it refused to co-operate no matter how long I kneaded it.

Please can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I have found it easier to do a combination of gumpaste & fondant for my flowers. When you roll it out, use a combination of corn starch & confectioners sugar to dust the flowers so that it doesn't stick to the tools.
