I am trying to price a 3 tier birthday cake. I will be a 10", 8", and a bowl. It is to be half and half chocolate and vanilla, and half and half mickey/minnie mouse. Vanilla buttercream with fondant. I will be in it around 40.00. What would you bakers out there charge for this cake? Thank you for your input!

A lot more than that. Have you done any type of pricing research or figured out your costs? You'll be losing money on that. icon_sad.gif

Oh I see what you meant, your costs are $40, that makes more sense.

Agree..... 40 will probably be the total cake cost..... If not you will getting paid like 0.25$ per hour!

Unless you will be using licensed figurines or a decopac you should not use Mickey or Minnie Mouse as decorations until you obtain written permission from Disney, otherwise you are infringing on Disney's copyright and could be sued.

jason, thank you for your useless info. icon_sad.gif i am not using any of their "licensed" things...so no lawyers will be necessary for the making of this cake.

That could be an issue, if you are making the Mickey and Minnie Mouse decorations yourself you are putting yourself at risk. If you still plan on using those decorations I strongly recommend getting yourself liability insurance coverage if you don't have it already, there's no need to get a lawyer.

Re your pricing question, how many hours do you estimate it will take to complete the cake, including prep, baking, decorating, packaging, and cleanup?

Jason, I see what you were saying. I apologize for my snide remark. I will check into that. Probably 16-20 hours minimum spent for the whole process.

For 24 hours of work (include padding of 20%) at, say, $10/hour you are looking at labor costs of $240. Add the $40 in ingredient costs and another $20 for per-order overhead (the $20 figure is a guess based on $1000 of annual overhead and 1 order per week) and you're at $300. Add a 20% profit margin and you have a price of $360.

Are you SURE about your costs? Not saying you aren't capable of calculating your costs but are you sure you included EVERYTHING? Dowel rods, cakes boards between layers, materials to cover boards... all of those dimes and quarters add up fast.
I only ask because I calculated a 3 tier earlier this week and my cost was nearly $75.
