Hi all can anyone tell me where i am going wrong.i have had two disasterous attempts at making a candy shell for my giant cupcake in the wilton cupcake pan.i have followed the tutorial, brushed a thin layer of melts on to the pan and refrigerated them and then applied a thicker coat and refridgerated again for one hour.the problems i am having are that my brush clogs up with the melts and i get an uneven clumpy effect on the inside and i have not been successful in removing the shell from the pan in one piece which means i have to eat the broken shell and that is not good for my diet.
hope someone can help me with this as everyone elses candymelt shells look stunning and i really want to get this right
I've never made one, but if you're using Wilton candy melts, I know from trying to make cake pops that they don't melt perfectly smooth...I had to add oil to thin mine out.
I don't think it matters if you're getting a clumpy looking interior since the cake would go in there and cover all that.
I read somewhere that you can loosen the chocolate shell by running hot water on the sides of the pan briefly.
You can re-melt the broken shell
I use the plastic insert from the pan to make mine. I spray it 1st with a little PAM. I also don't use the brush, I use my hands ( covered in a food glove) to "paint" the inside with a thick coat .Then I put mine in the freezer. Using that plastic makes it easy to pop out because I can manipulate it.
If you don't have the plastic insert I imagine the same steps would work on the pan.
Good luck, this took me a few tries too...
i have only made a shell once, but it was wayyyyy easier than i was expecting. I did not use the directions from the tutorial. I poured the candy melts on the bottom and brushed it up the sides (if the makes sense!). it was a thicker shell. I did two coats and threw it in the freezer for 15 minutes each time. It slid right out of the pan. I didnt use pam or other ooking spray.
Hi, I have one of the silicone giant cupcake pans. I had trouble to. It took 3 tries to get a liner. On the 3rd one, I froze it for a few hours and made a really thick coat of chocolate. Three coats I think. It was ugly on the inside but you couldn't tell once it was out of the pan. I did remelt the chocolate after it cracked and added a little oil to help smooth it. My only problem was that once I assembled the cupcake and put it in the fridge it cracked. I am not sure if my bottom layer of cake was tall enough to support the top of the cupcake. I hope that was it because I have to make another. Hope this helps.
I made my first giant cupcake a few weeks ago. I followed mrsvb78's tutorial and it worked perfectly. I thought I would have to "pop" it loose from the pan but it just lifted right out. It will look lumpy inside but that doesn't matter. I tilted the pan on it's side and drizzled the candy melts all around and then used my fingers to spread it out and into the grooves. I also trimmed the ridges off the bottom half of the cupcake before I iced it. When I put the cake into the shell it only went in about half way. So I took a cake board and laid it on top and GENTLY pressed the cake down into the shell. I thought for sure the shell would crack but it didn't. On a different post someone said that if your candy melts are old that you will have trouble getting it out of the pan. I would try a little PAM in the pan. I hope you get it to work. Good Luck!
thankyou everybody for your help,i will have another try.

Did you let the cake settle before you put it in the shell. The cake might have settled after it was put in the shell. The weight from the top cake might have made the bottom cake expand in width, thus cracking the shell.
I think I iced the bottom layer put it into the shell and iced the top. It looked like it came to the rim of the shell. I may have not waited long enough for it to settle. How long do you wait?
