I need to make a cake in a couple months to resemble a baked pie (probably cherry). This cake is to serve at least 50 and look as realistic as possible. Ideally I thought it would look great to have it in an oversized pie plate, but I don't know how possible that would be. Do you have any suggestions for carving, designing, presentation, or achieving realism?

Thanks in advance!

The 'pie plate' is fondant that I rolled in a strip and wrapped around the cake after I cut it to slope in a bit like a real pie plate. Because the top of the cake was a little too heavy, I'd use a fairly sturdy cake if I was to do it again. The chocolate cake I used was a bit too weak in structure. I had thought to use a real pie plate, but couldn't find one that was 4 inches deep. To feed 50 you're going to need at least a 12 inch cake by 4 inches tall. I don't think you're going to find a pie plate that size. HTH
