I've read all over the place that I should freeze me cake for a day or so before decorating it and this may seem like a really dumb question, but do I freeze while still in the pan or do I need to somehow manage to remove it,wrap, then freeze? thank you

Yes, remove from pan, cool, wrap in plastic wrap then foil. If freezing for a length of time do the same but place cake in a paper bag. HTH
