How can I get a coloring book effect on fondant. I basically want the cake to look like the character is coloring in the happy birthday letters with a crayon. I saw one cake where the guy said he used edible images and petal dust. How would I do that though. I also have edible markers but I doubt the would give the crayon look. Any suggestions? Its for a cake later this month.

What I would do is hand draw the Happy Birthday outline in black (or print it out, if you can find the right font), then partially color it with crayons (like a work in progress). Then you can scan the drawing and print it out (or have it printed out) as an edible image. I'm not sure what the petal dust would be for - I think if you used it for the coloring, it would be too smooth and not crayon-like enough. Then you could have your figure holding a crayon in his hand like he was coloring the sign. Does that make any sense?

I would use a flat tipped brush, blot some of the color from the brush and dab or "stipple" it to make it look like crayon. You could even use a stencil

I think I get it. Maybe I should try a "draft" first to see how it will come out. I dont have an edible printer so that may be a problem for me... Ill figure it out

I don't know about the US, but here in Mexico places like CostCo, Sam's and many bakeries have edible image printers and (for a price) they'l print it for you. However, if you get a chance to choose, get them to print it on rice paper, not on frosting sheets, which tend to stick to their backing unless you use them right away - or maybe that's just because I live in the most humid place on Earth!

Do you have any edible pens? I would do as the other poster said and do an outline (by hand) of a drawing in black and then partially colour some parts in with the edible pens just like using a colouring pencil/pen. i think this would worth quite well and then no need for an edible image print out then HTH icon_biggrin.gif
