Can I use any stencil? Last minute cake and not enough time to order one especially for a cake...ideas, suggestions?

What is your stencil made out of and what was it used for in the past? If it's brand new and plastic, I would use it. If it's been used for markers and the like I'd wash it well, then decide if I think it's food safe. I have made my own stencils out of paper before; maybe that's an option for you. Good Luck!

Not quite understanding the question. Do you have a stencil already? It sounds like you don't but then ask if it's ok to use any stencil? At any rate, do you really need a stencil? Zebra stripes can be cut out of fondant or you can hand paint them on fondant or even buttercream if it's cold and hard enough. Just use your gel coloring and thin if necessary with lemon extract or vodka.

For a true custom stencil, rip a papertowl accross the grain and experimeint with the amount of gap.

Want to stencil the sides of a cake with Buttercream for a zebra print look. Actually, I don't have a stencil yet. I just figure it will be easy to find one at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, fabric store, etc. I have thought about fondant, but I really don't want to go that route. Hadn't thought about painting it on. Not sure I understand the paper towel idea. I think if I can find a decent stencil, I'll give it a go. Any other options?
