I am making Red Velvet cupcakes for a friend for her birthday. I have never even had red velvet! So I have no clue what a good combo of frosting and filling would be. We talked about cream cheese because that seems to be standard, but she also wants rose swirls and I am afraid that cream cheese frosting will not pipe well and will just kinda mush the rose swirl design.

So, would it work to do a small amount of filling in cream cheese frosting and then pipe the swirls on top with buttercream?? Or would that taste funny? Ugh Help!!!

The cream cheese as a filling would be good, and I think the Heirloom Frosting is the frosting that originally was paired with RV. Have you tried your cream cheese frosting as a "rose" because It may hold up, I have tried a few and done a rose bouquet and was fine.

Thank you for the reply!

That heirloom frosting sounds good! I think it would be a good filling. I am leery to try the swirls with cream cheese, but I did find a crusting cream cheese frosting recipe that seemed to have good reviews.... Ugh I am just very indecisive and don't want to end up wasting a ton of money. But I like hearing that you have done this before and that they held up! Gives me some confidence that it will work thumbs_up.gif

This recipe will definitely hold rose swirls. It held vertical ribbons on the sides of a cake for me:

It tastes great too!

I used that frosting to do my rose cake in my profile but with all butter (no shortening)!
