Hi there. I was asked to make Dr. Seuss cake/cupcakes but they want Yertle The Turtle to be the star! (also include other books, but wanted this to be the main theme) I am having a tough time coming up with ideas...especially for the cupcakes. Thinking of maybe making little fondant items on top of each cupcake..some Yertle, some of Cat in The Hat, some of the Fish..etc. Any other ideas would be great! But my main question is, I attached a link...can anyone tell me what the Yertle the Turtle is made of? And is it possible to do something similar to this in Fondant or Gumpaste? Thanks guys!!

Im not an expert in decorating mediums but to me, that looks like a gumpaste or pastillage plaque drawn/colored with edible markers. It might also be an edible image on a gumpaste plaque but it looks more freehand to me.

I think you could make really cute yertle figurines out of a fondant/gumpaste or even out of modeling chocolate (although its harder to get pure white in chocolate).

Here are some cupcakes with yertle edible images

and heres another Yertle cake example with fondant gumpaste figures

You could also make the cake look like the yertle the turtle book and then do the matching cupcakes if youre worried about sculpting a cake to other shapes. HTH
