Hello, I am planning on making a basketball cake for a friend next week, and i was wondering how I can get the 'dimple' effect the ball has? Any ideas or advice is greatly received.

Many thanks

Are you doing the basketball in fondant or buttercream?

Hi Melanie, I was going to use fondant.....didn't even think/know I could use buttercream.....I'm willing to try either - which ever is recommended.
Many thanks

I have done one in buttercream, I use the Viva paper towel method to smooth it 1st , then there is a brand of paper towels, sorry I cannot recall which ones I used, that has the round little impressions in it. Check them out at yoru market. I rubbed that on the ball gently and it created the perfect basketball texture.

I have also done one in fondant, with that I have a texture mat that came with a cookie cutter set that I use.

You can use a new, clean sponge on buttercream to get the dimples. I saw this years ago, but I don't remember where - - Wilton maybe?
