I'm making a drum cake for a wedding. I've done one before and used a 3" round styrofoam base as part of the drum because they wanted it to be tall. This time I really don't want to use one though. My quesion - is something like that necessary for stability? The cake will be about 8-9" tall without a base. Thanks for your help!

Use cake boards and dowels in between the layers and one center support dowel and you should be good.
