I read a thread on here not too long ago about using straws to keep wires in place.

I'm only a hobby baker and quite new at this so I might not be the best person to answer but....
When I need to put something on a cake that has wires, I put in a drinking plastic straw and partially fill it with either frosting or melted chocolate and then place the wire in. This keeps the wires from coming into direct contact with cake and the frosting/melted chocolate keeps it in place. Hope this helps.
