Smooth Buttercream

I love how fondant finished cakes look, but i prefer to use buttercream, i just cant get my buttercream to look smooth. Any tips or ideas. I heard that adding corn syrup helps to smooth buttercream. Any ideas???

Practice is the only way to do it. You should go get yourself a flat bench scraper or a scraper from your local hardware store. Put on twice as much BC as you think you will need, then scrape around in one motion. Usually I can get my cakes smooth in one or two turns using this method. But you have to have a good thick application to begin with. Make sure your icing isn't too thick or it will be impossible to smooth. You can use this method for a crusting or non-crusting BC. If your recipe crusts, then you can go back over it with a piece of parchment or waxed paper and smooth any spatula marks. Some people on here use a Viva paper towel but I find those very linty.
