I wanted to make a checkered flag design on a cake with fondant but I'm not sure how. Do I have to put another layer of fondant underneath and then cut out separate squares of black and white over it? Or can I just put the black and white fondant squares right on the cake?

I would first cover my cake with white fondant, then add just the black squares. I once made a checkered flag design on the side of a cake by printing the design on frosting sheets. I then cut it to fit only on the sides.
