Well, I found gold highlighter dust mixed with lemon extract works beautifully. If you're covering a whole cake, you'd have to spray it I would think. But for decor and embellishments, I prefer the gold highlighter dust over just gold lustre dust...though that works too.
If you are doing the whole cake gold rather than just accents, it is easy to airbrush the fondant once you've applied it either using airbrush color, or the pme lustre spray (in an aerosol can).

It helps tremendously if your fondant is a yellow gold color before you add the gold luster dust or air brush. It makes the resulting gold much more vivid.
