I have seen alot of pictures of basket cakes with handles but not sure how the handle is made. If it is gumpaste, it seems like there would be alot of pressure on it once it is on the cake and it would possibly break in the center. I thought about using a metal coat hanger and cover it with gumpaste. What is the best way to do it?

Sugarshack (Sharon Zambito) has a tutorial here:

If the link doesn't work, go to sugared productions website, go to blog, then it's from april 2011.

I use half of the rim of a bucket lid. Home Depot sells medium sized white lids in the paint department. I use a razer knife and cut off the rim. Cut it in half and you have two handles. You can either wrap it in ribbon or a gumpaste braid. The is a little space on the inside of the handle where I hot glue a lollie pop stick to support the handle to help it stand up.
