Icing For Piping?

Last week I made a birthday cake and most of it came out really well. Both the flowers and fondant were better than I had ever done before. The I tried to pipe around the cake at the base and between the layers and that's where it went wrong. I tried to pipe dots but they just didn't turn out as dots. I used the basic recipe on the box of the royal icing sugar box. So is there a better recipe I should be using or is it just something I am doing wrong?
