Is there a foolproof way to pipe straight horzontal lines on a round cake?

You can use a seam guide, used in sewing, to mark around the cake or I just saw a Wilton product in Micheals for marking cakes. The seam guide you can buy really cheap at Wal Mart.

Mark the cake with a ruler - that should help.
