Hello!

I uploaded a photo of a cake at the weekend and was really pleased to see it hit the #1 spot! It featured a shiny 'satin' bow and lots of folks asked for instructions.

Thanks for your sweet comments, guys! I just use marshmallow fondant that I make myself with nothing added, but I have done this with Duff, Satin Ice and Fondarific too. I'm sure you know, but the darker the color, the longer the fondant takes to dry, so bear that in mind. The Duff fondant seems to stay soft for a very long time, even the lighter colors, so it's not ideal for this bow.

I know a lot of people use gumpaste and while it is edible, I just don't think people would actually like to eat it! I much prefer to use fondant, but you could use the same technique with gumpaste or fondant and Tylose, or even modeling chocolate.

WOW! I am soooo glad I found this post. I always saw fabulous bows and wondered how people did them but never could quite figure it out. I used your technique this weekend and the results were awesome. I was so proud of how the bow looked. I wanted to ask you about your spray though. I found some on a website, but was wondering if you just bought the clear glaze or if you bought the colored ones? I found PME lustre spray in colors or PME edible glaze spray in clear.

Hi, Cargen! I'm so glad the tutorial was useful. Did you post the cake with the bow on in your photos?

I use the coloured sprays and obviously used the pink one for the bow on that Juicy cake. I build it up slowly though, a thin coat at a time. It only takes minutes to dry so it's not too time-consuming. If you spray too much on at once it can become wet. I've not seen the clear glaze! That's sounds great!

Hi, I am still a newbie with cake decorating and only started this summer. I have attempted at making the bow maybe 15 times anf thats no exaggeration icon_surprised.gif Its just kept on cracking and tearing and not looking smooth I did however use half fondant and half gumpaste I am wondering if that was the problem?
