You right, there is no tutorial for a hat box cake.I made a round cake, put gumpaste flowers on the top. For the lid i bought a real hat box lid at Hobby Lobby and covered it beautifully with fondant or gumpaste. Put the lid nex to the cake covering some flowers. Nobody even noticed that it's fake lid.

I have made a box cake and lid...for the lid I used an actual lid covered in plastic wrap and covered in crisco, and formed my gumpaste over it...once it is dry it should hold its shape once removed from the box top. I made the tissue using the gumpaste rolled paper thin and used dowels to hold up the lid

Sharon Zambito has a marvelous DVD showing several different ways to do boxes (SugarShack on CC)

Elisa Strauss has a book

Confetti Cakes for Kids

that has detailed instructions on making an open box using cake as the lid that you might find in your local library or book store.
