So I'm almost never happy with my cakes but after a while when I look back on the pictures, I like them better. The most recent example is the cake I made for my hula sister's wedding (in my pics). I was completely horrified by this cake when I delivered it but now looking at the pictures it doesn't look as bad. icon_razz.gif

Do you do this to yourself too or am I just way too paranoid? icon_wink.gif

You're waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too paranoid.

But I think all 'cakers' are overly self-critical.

Your cakes are lovely.

People say the exact title of this thread to me after every cake. I'm never happy with a cake, there is always something that I can see that I don't like and it drives me mad lol. I've gotten better at covering bits up if I make a mistake, but I still see faults. I love clicking on the photos button on peoples posts and seeing a page of someones cakes as opposed to seeing my own collection every time I log in. I wish I could see my cakes through the eyes of someone else. I think we are all critical of our own work in some way. Your cakes are lovely. I have yet to try my hand at cake pops, I can't really be bothered with all the effort for just one bite of cake lol.

Hey cool, I hadn't realized there was a photo button to click on people's posts (newbie) You all make beauuuutiful cakes icon_smile.gif
But I know the feeling of only noticing the flaws in one's own work. Lately I've been really trying to learn NOT to point out the mistakes in my cakes to the people I've made them for icon_wink.gif (friends mostly since I'm a hobbybaker)

Know exactly what you mean with this one! I see every flaw on my cakes and have a tendancy of pointing them out to everyone! lol. I am doing my best to keep the flaws to myself. I am starting to realize not everyone sees the flaws that I do, so what they don't know won't hurt them. icon_smile.gif

Hahaha I do that EVERY TIME! Lol. I even say right I'm not going to do it this time, but then it just spills out of my mouth when they come to pick it up. Luckily it is only my friends and family, otherwise I'd be having to offer out refunds probably per mistake haha if I were a business that is. I think when you see the photos you don't see so many flaws so they do look better. and I have only been doing these cakes for 5 months, and I already see great improvement in my work (although I still have a hell of a long way to go) but its nice sometimes to look at my photos and see the first one and then the more recent ones icon_smile.gif

I"m a cupcake girl (don't decorate cakes) so, I'm usually critical of my recipes! I have my set recipes that I bake for the business but, whenever I bake them for personal, I tweak things and while everyone is busy scarfing them down, I'm taking small bites and trying to figure out what to tweak next. LOL. My hubby calls me the mad scientists and wants to get my a lab coat and crazy gogglea to complete the look when I'm busy in the kitchen mixing, tasting and scribbling little notes in my notebook.

I'm critical of my lack of creativity for my cakes and worried they don't look good.

The problem with me is when I come back and look at them later, I always think they look worse. icon_sad.gif

I need to post some of my more recent cakes too.

That's completely normal! You are looking at the cake from inches away for hours if not days! You see EVERY little flaw in that icing. NOBODY is going to inspect it that closely unless it's in a competition. Try looking at a butterfly up close for a long period of time. Not so pretty, are they? Because you see every little flaw. You will get better with time and practice. Trust me!! But if you're not having fun, you're doing it wrong!! icon_biggrin.gif

We all see the flaws in our work. I do it all the time.

Think about it this way; knowing your flaws helps you to improve on your work. Don't let it get to you, just let it help you learn.

Um, yes. I do this with every. single. cake. icon_wink.gif My DH always tells me to back away from the cake, because I'm usually sitting there whining about how ugly it is when I am right in front of it!

The pictures almost always make me feel better though. Your cakes are gorgeous, btw!

Coral3 Posted 24 Aug 2011 , 12:03am

You're not alone!

I only ever see what's wrong with my cakes. I always look at the finished product and think in terms of IF I were selling this... and most of the time I would be too embarrassed to expect money for what I produce. Which I guess is why I've never got my kitchen inspected and registered. I'd feel way too guilty charging for faulty goods!

milkmaid42 Posted 24 Aug 2011 , 12:19am

I think this is common among a lot of us decorators. I also try not to denigrate my cakes in front of people, although sometimes it takes a forcible swallow to keep quiet. I learned my lesson from the Halloween spider cake I made some time ago. As an entomology major in college, I felt horrified when the cake ended up with three body parts instead of a spider's two. I was so embarrassed that I refunded 1/2 of the payment. Stupid thing to do for now I realize it probably mattered only to me. icon_redface.giftapedshut.gif
