I'm making a pool cake. I was thinking of coloring piping gel blue. Will this be ok on top of a fondant covered cake? I'm thinking the gel sort of liquifies the fondant...is that correct?
What would be the best method?
I have done that a million times and it always turns out great. Never had a problem with it turning soft or "liquidy"
I recently did the same thing on a cake and I didn't have any issues at all. You really don't need much at all to give the effect you are going for. I added my coloring to the gel and made sure to mix it in a way the I didn't end up with tons of bubbles. A fork worked best for me. I added it to the cake in small amounts. Good luck!

I've used piping gel on fondant and bc and it does not liquefy either.
Like MajesticCupcakes said "you only need a little" so start out with a very small about, and then add until you get the shade you need.
A little piping gel goes a long way. When I add color, I don't mix it in all the way. The "marbled" look gives the impression of waves. If you want to make whitecaps, like in an ocean, I put a layer of white buttercream under the piping gel. Then, as I mix in the blue coloring, I end up lifting some of the buttercream to the surface, creating whitecaps. I've never had a problem with buttercream or fondant with the piping gel. You'll be fine!!!
