I mean, ive doubled some and it work perfectly, while others were complete disasters. I have yet to try halving. What exactly makes it work, or not?

Well, both actually. for different recipes.
Well, it's definitely easier to double/halve frosting recipes as you can tweak them, if necessary...
Can't really do that to a cake recipe which requires baking before you can see the finished product.
