And no, I don't think 8 hours is too long to ask people to work. I actually work 2 12 hour days, and 1 18 hour day. I prefer it. I am 31 and 3/4, lol.

My husband is 37 ans works 4 10 hour days. And then helps me for about 4 hours on 2 of his days off. He loves it.

It's not feasible anywhere! It is right next to socialism. Someone has to do the work, so you have to pay 2 people to do one job. Look at Greece, they retire at 40 and expect the government to pay for it, and when Greece went bankrupt, the people threw a tantrum like babies. It is not sustainable.

When something seems to good to be true, it probably is!

Months and months off no... but 1 month off plus sick leave is definitely feasible in Australia and is the standard. We also have long service leave which you are entitled to once you reach 10 years with a company, and is the equivalent of 12 weeks leave.

I think the point here is balance....employees need rest to prevent burnout, and they shouldn't have to pay to have that rest. Not only is it the human thing to do...it also makes more business sense.

Even here in Canada with our 'commie socialist healthcare" (j/k) there are jobs that don't provide any paid sick time or vacation whatsoever unless they are mandated by law.

I once worked a (very stressful) job where you had 10 unpaid days a year for whatever, sick time or vacation time and any more over that you would be fired. You could have cancer and it wouldn't matter. Oh, and if you got sick, you lost the healthcare insurance that you paid for. For 'bonuses' we could work our butts off and earn....one day off without pay, or sometimes even a popsicle! (really.) Well...you can imagine what morale was like at that place.

On the other hand...to have a couple months vacation plus sick time seems excessive.

All in all, I'd have to say it's really hard balancing the needs of the employer vs. the needs of the employee.

If you make a billion a year and want to do that for your employees, more power to you! I just think it is suicide for a country to mandate it. I know many people think twice about starting a business knowing they will have to pay 3 people to do 2 jobs 9 months out of the year, so they can all get their 3 months off!

Don't get me started on healthcare!!! Just say there is really no motivation for most people innovate and excel when they don't have the money incentive, much like your crappy Popsicle bonus. It takes money, and when it is a free-for-all, there are limited resources and incentives for the people doing all the work. I believe that people should all pay, but it should be more affordable. And catastrophic care should be set up on an affordable payment plan, with a voucher program for the poor, but everyone should pay something.

And this is coming from someone who lived with back pain for 10 years before going to the Dr. only to find out my discs are flat and I need surgery I cannot afford. And whose teeth look like a cross between a hippy commune and nursery, they are so snaggled and missing.

I agree that it's very difficult for small business to provide all the 'perks' that a larger company can afford (that crappy job I had was with the largest telecom company in the country btw) and no, government shouldn't have to mandate it for it to be the norm, and for the most part it's not, but there should absolutely be some safeguards for employees in place.

When it comes to healthcare...we do pay...with taxes! icon_biggrin.gif Also with our time, because we wait forever for some procedures. All in all though, I consider it a small price to pay knowing that my elderly grandmothers, small children, disabled people, and of course the rest of us won't be financially crippled if they get sick. I also don't believe that you should go to the front of the line with a broken pinky finger just because you can afford to pay more than a less fortunate person with cancer.

Anywho...this is totally off topic and not about cakes so this particular friendly discussion should probably carry on somewhere else. icon_smile.gif

You are correct! I love to debate, I get carried away, but always try to keep it civil thumbs_up.gif

Am I the the only one that doesn't care if my original topic veers off into left field? I enjoy the meandering path of a rel conversation...I need to get off the computer and get some friends, lol!

I do see how it is important when you ask a question and want advice, but in general, it is nice...
