How To Make An 18" Round Cake Without A 18" Round
Decorating By liv711 Updated 25 Jul 2011 , 4:15pm by cathyscakes
I need to make a wedding cake with the bottom tier being 18" round. Problem is, the largest I can fit into my oven is a 12" pan.
Does it make sense to bake several sheet cakes, place them on an 18" round cake board and carve around it to make it an 18" round cake? Has anyone done this?
Help!
Well..you could but I wouldn't..for stability issues...placing carved/pieced cakes together to form a base for a wedding cake to me is just asking for structural problems..shifting etc...
Thanks for your prompt reply!
When making wedding cakes, structurally, any tier could be real cake and the rest could be faux cake right? Like if I wanted only the middle tier to be real cake, that's fine?
They sell 18" half rounds.
This is a thread about it:

Yes..any tiers can be fake it all just has to be supported correctly so as to not crush the real tier.
There are also 16 inch half rounds as well that you might be interested in for future cakes since you have a small oven.
Yes I just did a wedding cake with a 18" half round. It worked great. I can't fit a regular 18" in my oven either. I was so disappointed in my new oven, beautiful stainless confection oven, but I didn't think to messure the oven, and the largest I can fit is 16" because of the fan in the back. When I stacked the cake together, I just alternated the layers so they didn't line up with the one on the bottom.
