Multi-Tiered Cake W/ Smbc...how To Get It Smooth???

I have attempted this once before, with mediocre results. I used a turntable to smooth each tier independently and then attempted to place the smaller tier on top. I ended up messing up the bottom edges of the top tier and got really frustrated trying to get it all smooth again.

Whats the secret? I know that with a crusting buttercream, the paper towel method is a favorite, but I'm stuck when it comes to SMBC.
