Hey Everyone,

I am making a mandolin (small guitar) cake for my husbands bday. And I was wondering if anyone can direct me to any links/forums that talk about/teach about making guitar cakes/ wooden fondant/ etc...

I am going to try and attach a picture of the mandolin, so if anyone has any tips, you can let me know.

Oh and I am going to try it as a sheet cake, I was wanting to make it 3D, standing up, but my hubby said he thinks it would be easier for me (as a beginner) to make it lying down.

Thank you so much for any and all help,

So, its not letting me attach my picture, but it is an ovation mandolin. The bottom is red with black edges. there are two "wooden" designs on the body. and the neck is wood grain with mother of pearl circles throughout it. The top, where the knobs are, are mother of pearl and gold thingies that hold the strings... thanks!

Sounds awesome.

I don't have any links to tutorials, but when I make guitar cakes I trace the guitar that I"m replicating (if I have it) to make a template. Use paper or poster board.

I bake a sheet cake, freeze it slightly to firm it up and lay the template on the cake and cut to shape.

I usually make the neck from RKT and cover the entire thing in fondant.

You can use gel food colors mixed with either vodka or pure lemon extract to paint the wood grain.
