Unless you plan on making pudding from scratch, the artificial taste of the fake pudding will be in your scratch cake. It would be better to develop your scratch cake into one that is more moist without the artificial component.
Buddy has a scratch cake with two cups of homemade pastry cream added to the batter. It's a great cake, but time-intensive. Mega moist too.
