Cake Cutting 101 Question

How do you remove the tiers for cutting without destroying the layer beneath it? Do you use a spatula to lift or try to "dig" you fingers under the edge of the cake board? Either way seems like it would scrape up the icing on the layer it is sitting on.

Lift the cake off the bottom one with a spatula/long knife, if you are careful it should dent a lot.
