This cake is amazing (wish I knew how make a cake like this!!!)....she is such a talented cake artist. It is from michelle sugar art:

I can't tell if it is rolled fondant covering the cake or just buttercream? I can see cake and a thick layer of white buttercream and then I can't tell what is the skin color layer is....fondant? or more buttercream?

I think it's fondant. look at the area between where the head is cut, you can see the color difference, and it's thicker than what an airbrush would do. (you shouldda seen me tiling my head and trying to move the computer screen lol)

It almost seems like there is a layer of something like molding chocolate or maybe fondant, but it being that thick I'd go with the chocolate. The chocolate would be able to be sculpted easily to make the facial features, then a layer of flesh color fondant on top. I don't think it's buttercream, it looks too solid for that.

Texassugar, it could be like you said a layer of modeling chocolate and then fondant. somewhere in her website I read that she uses marzipan for cakes. so maybe it is covered in Marzipan.....

I went to her site and he cakes are amazing icon_eek.gif but when reading about the figurines.. icon_confused.gif they are made out of somekind of compond and not eatable, her work on the piece from the OP is so realistic...coulnd't help to take a peak. Wondering weather or not the out side of that cake is this compond stuff too icon_confused.gif
