I don't make decorated cookies too often, but when I do I usually use Royal Icing.
I was looking through a cookie catalog and saw that they iced their cookies with buttercream. They look very yummy, so I was wondering what you all usually use for cookies like this?

Can you use any buttercream recipe? What about the cookies? Are they usually sugar cookies or something else?

What cookie catalog was this? It would help to see a photo.

Karen't cookies.net has a buttercream recipe that works wonderfully.

I agree! I use her meringue powder buttercream all the time...it sets up but not so hard as royal icing, and it tastes soooo much better than royal. You can even use texture mats on this icing if you let it crust for an hour.

She also has a video of how she makes the icing--and lots of other cookie videos and tutorials.

If you are like me you get impatient and want to frost them now and eat at least one. I put mine in the fridge or outside to cool them faster otherwise the icing will melt on the cookie and look like a x-mas blob not a x-mas cookie.
