i need to make three 3-D flies (for Lord of the Flies) for a cake.
does anyone have any ideas on how to do so? i can't seem to find any images or tutorials... probably not a very popular figure to make!!!
i'd love to hear your thoughts... THNAKS!
Hey, you are a lady after my own heart! You've come to the right place: CC will always come up with something.
I made a Halloween cake and figured the flies added just the right touch. If you will look at the second page of my pics you can see the cake and one of the additional pics is a close up of the flies I made. They were fashioned out of gum paste and I made the wings of gelatin. The veins were drawn on with edible marker. The legs are wire. If it is of any help, google house fly images for more detail. I was an entomology major in college so I just used an old text. If you need more help with the gelatin, just pm me and I will give you the info.
Good luck on your cake. The flies truly make it creepy.

Here are some fondant bees and dragonflies that might help you get some ideas.

Maybe someone else knows of a tutorial. You could try looking through Sculptey & clay modeling books from the library to see if there are any flies in there.
Eeew. Gross. Is this for the 1,000,000 book cake?
You'll be a pioneer, making gumpaste flies! You'll probably have to use a photo of a real fly as a guide. Just white wings on black bodies with black heads. But you could imprint the head/eyes with a mesh strainer for texture... And if you really wanted to go all-out, maybe gelatin wings would give translucence... A flower or leaf veiner could give texture to the wings, too. Some pearl dust on the black bodies might give you some of the iridescence the really big, nasty flies have.
(Sorry, probably not much help.)
Flies. Yikes. Good luck!
(ICK!)
Your flies look incredible! I would love to know how you made them in cases I ever need to make icky flies! lol ;o) Good job!
