A few questions.
1) Prior to freezing a cake should I cut the layers first or place in the freezer after cooling without cutting the layer?
2) How long can a cake remain in the freezer prior to using?

1) It's up to you.
2) Again, it's up to you... if wrapped properly, they can last 6-12 months or more. Wholesalers ship frozen layers with "best used by" dates of 6-8 months, and 1st anniversary cakes are frozen for a year.
