Same Day Or Day Before?

OK, so I need some more help from more advanced cake bakers and decorators.... making a 3 tiered cake and a baby cake for sons 1st birthday, which is on a Saturday. We plan on making the cakes throughout the week. I know icing the cakes the day of would have a better texture/feel to the icing, but doing it before hand, like the day before, would save some time for the actual day to get the decorations ready and what not.

Is there a way to ice/frost the cakes beforehand, but have the icing still feel smooth and fluffy? Or would it just be better to try to decorate early the day of? We've thought perhaps cake containers would help, but we'll have a 14inch, 10 inch, and a 6inch. I don't have if I've seen a container for a 14 inch. Either way, thanks for viewing and adding any help/information.

I always frost the day before and never had a problem. Cakes need to settle after filling and frosting but before fondant and/or decorating
