How Do I Make A Fondant/gumpaste Number Of Monogram?

I have seen so many wonderful cakes with adorable numbers on top, how do you get the numbers to stand up on the cake? When I've done it in the past I would form a wire and cover the wire in fondant. But that doesn't look like the same technique many fo you use. TIA icon_biggrin.gif

I just cut mine from gum paste, lay them flat to dry and insert a stiff wire or thin skewer into the base.
