Crusting Vs Non-Crusting Buttercream

I hope someone can explain this to me. When should I use crusting bc and when should I use non-crusting bc?

If I'm frosting a cake with bc and not putting fondant on top, should I use crusting or non-crusting? When is it better to use crusting over non-crusting and vice versa.

It's all just personal preference. There are no rules about this.
