I am brand new to the cake making game. I made one to practice, before I take on a four tiered Star Wars Lego cake for my sons 7th birthday. My question is, can you use Wilton ready made decorator icing under the fondant, or do you have to use buttercream?

buy a small tub and taste it and then make your decision. alot of people will make ganache and use that under the fondant. it makes for a very clean, sharp cake.

Thanks, I just wasn't sure whether or not it would have the same smooth surface you get with buttercream.

decorating icing and buttercream are essentially the same thing.

Fondant cakes should be frosted with buttercream or covered with ganache before covering in fondant.
