How does one make a mushroom house cake. I have looked at the giant cupcake pan and just thought that I would end up carving most of the cake away to make it look like a mushroom. Are there any other options? Perhaps a thin round tin and then a bowl for the top of the mushroom??

What I would do is bake a soccer ball cake and then a 6' or 8' round. you can add cake paste to the bottom of the soccer ball to get the rounded look, then cover with icing or fondant. This will give you the big "fluffy" top an the skinny middle. I was planning to do this cake last year but I ended up doing mini mushrooms instead for the bday cake, but i did them out of rice krispies.
