I recently attempted covering a cake in fondant, and had a major snafu. I draped the fondant over the cake and trimmed off the excess, but then I noticed that at the base of the cake the fondant was folding over itself in places. Does anyone know what could have caused this, or how to avoid it in the future? I'm now in awe of fondant enrobed cakes that have perfectly smooth edges without that weird folding/pleating that happened to me.

Any tips would be so appreciated!

Hi, go to youtube and you will see so many showing how to cover round and square cakes in fondant. So very helpful. There is a lady, named sweetwise on youtube , showing how to do both. She is using 2 mats that she sells for this purpose. hth aine2(c/cer) is also on there and like i said , so many. Planet cakes also. I review it all the time. lol! great tutorials.
