I have done this technique twice now and have only used fondant. Just make sure the fondant is rolled slightly thicker. Also, make sure that you don't warm up the fondant too much..let it be on the dryer side..then it will hold its shape much better.

Thank you for the pics! They are helpful! Wish me luck! I'm using fondant instead of gumpaste. Not getting the ends as clean but I'll probably cover them with flowers or dots.
